You have several protections. The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 applies to vessels, and operators must take reasonably practicable steps to keep crew safe, including maintaining equipment. Serious injuries must be notified to the regulator, and Maritime New Zealand or WorkSafe can investigate. You also have employment rights, including a written employment agreement and the right to raise a personal grievance if you are treated unfairly after reporting.
