My employer is not paying my KiwiSaver contributions, what can I do?
- 10.07.2026
I have been working from home several days a week for my job, using a spare room as an office. My employer does not reimburse me for this. Can I claim a deduction for a portion of my home costs on my tax return?
It depends on your circumstances. If you are self-employed, or a shareholder-employee running your own company, and use part of your home for business, you can generally claim a proportion of household costs, such as rates, insurance, power, mortgage interest or rent, and depreciation, based on the floor area used for business compared to the total area of the home, following Inland Revenue's guidance on apportionment. If you are an ordinary employee, deductions are more limited because employees generally cannot claim deductions against salary or wage income under the Income Tax Act 2007, although your employer may be able to pay a tax-free reimbursing allowance for home office costs under specific Inland Revenue guidelines, subject to conditions and record-keeping. Check whether your employer offers this, or discuss with an accountant if you are self-employed.
