My child has come home distressed several times and says a teacher humiliates students in class and shouts at them. I have raised it with the principal informally and was brushed off. What formal channels exist to complain about a teacher?

You can make a formal complaint to the school's board of trustees, which is the employer of the teacher, using the school's complaints procedure. Set out the concerns in writing with dates and examples, and ask the board to investigate fairly. Serious concerns about competence or conduct can also be reported to the Teaching Council of New Zealand, which regulates registered teachers under the Education and Training Act 2020, and the school has a duty to report serious misconduct. If the complaint involves safety or abuse, contact the police or Oranga Tamariki. Board procedures should protect the confidentiality of the child and teacher, and you should keep a record of all dates and responses. If the response is inadequate, you can escalate to the Ministry and the Ombudsman.
