What is the difference between a residence visa and citizenship?

I have been offered a job in New Zealand, and the employer says I need an Accredited Employer Work Visa. I have never heard of it. How does the process work, and what should I check before I accept the offer?
An Accredited Employer Work Visa is the main employer-assisted work visa. The employer must first be accredited by Immigration New Zealand, and then, for most roles, must obtain a Job Check confirming that the job meets the requirements, such as pay and, in many cases, evidence that they tried to hire locally. Once the job check is approved, the employer gives you the job check reference number, and you apply for the visa, providing evidence of your qualifications or experience and meeting health and character requirements. Before accepting the job, check that the employer is accredited on Immigration New Zealand's list and that the employment agreement matches the job check terms. Be cautious about paying employers or agents any fees to obtain a job, as that is unlawful in most cases.
