I received a letter from Immigration New Zealand saying they have information that might harm my application, and that I have a few weeks to respond. I do not understand what it is or how seriously I should take it.

This letter is often called a potentially prejudicial information letter. Under the Immigration Act 2009, if Immigration New Zealand intends to decline your application because of information that you are not aware of and that could count against you, it must generally tell you and give you a reasonable opportunity to comment before the decision is made. It could concern character, misstatements in your application, or doubts about a relationship or job. It is serious, since failing to respond or giving a weak response often leads to a decline. Read the letter carefully, observe the deadline and ask for an extension if you need it. Provide a full written response, supported by documents and statements, and consider engaging a licensed adviser or lawyer to help.
