My landlord will not return my bond, what can I do?

In New Zealand, the bond is held by Tenancy Services under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, and the landlord cannot simply keep it. At the end of the tenancy, the landlord must apply for the bond refund by lodging a claim with Tenancy Services, and you can agree to the refund. If you dispute the landlord's claim, tell Tenancy Services and either party can apply to the Tenancy Tribunal. The landlord must prove any claims for damage, and fair wear and tear cannot be deducted. Evidence of the property's condition, including your move-in and move-out photos and any inspection reports, is important. Tenancy Services offers free mediation to resolve disputes. If the landlord kept the bond without going through the process, you can apply to the Tribunal for recovery.
