I received a lawyer’s letter demanding a large amount of money over a contract dispute and threatening court proceedings if I do not reply in a week. I am anxious and tempted to ignore it. What steps should I take?

Do not ignore it, but do not react hastily either. Read the letter carefully to identify the claim, the amount and any deadlines, and put the document in a safe place. Preserve all relevant records, including emails, messages and contracts, and avoid deleting anything, since destroying documents can seriously harm your position. Do not admit liability or make offers in emails or phone calls without advice. Seek legal advice quickly, and if a short response is needed, reply politely to acknowledge receipt and say you are reviewing the matter and will respond within a reasonable time. Check whether you have insurance that may respond to the claim, for example professional indemnity or public liability, and notify the insurer promptly because late notice can affect cover.

I am thinking of bringing a claim in the High Court but the legal costs frighten me. If I win, will the other side have to pay all my legal fees? I have heard the winner rarely gets back everything. I want to make sure I am not missing anything important before I decide what to do.

I obtained a court judgment against a former customer, but months later I have received nothing. They ignore letters and it is unclear whether they have assets. Winning seems pointless if I cannot collect. What enforcement options do I actually have?

A client owes my small business a sizeable sum for work I completed months ago. They keep promising to pay but never do. I would like to know where I should take a claim, how much it is likely to cost and whether I really need a lawyer to do it.
