I was charged with common assault after an argument outside a bar turned physical. I have never been in trouble before and I am worried about my job. What is the process from here and what are the possible outcomes?

You will first appear in the District Court, where the charge is read and you can enter a plea, or ask for time to get legal advice. Common assault under the Crimes Act 1961 carries a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment, but a first offence with no serious injury often results in a lesser outcome. Options include diversion, if police agree, a discharge without conviction under section 106 of the Sentencing Act 2002 where the consequences of a conviction, such as loss of employment, would be out of proportion to the gravity of the offence, a fine, community work or supervision. Get a lawyer, and do not contact the complainant directly, as this can lead to further charges. Your lawyer can seek disclosure of police evidence and advise whether to plead or defend.
