I was found with a small amount of cannabis in my bag during a routine event search. I am not a dealer, just a user. Will police prosecute or do they usually let it slide? I would like to know what steps I should take next to protect myself.

Possession of cannabis remains an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 and can carry up to three months' imprisonment or a fine, but the police have a discretion over how to respond. Under the Police Adult Diversion Scheme and the Solicitor-General's prosecution guidelines, police can consider a warning, or a health-focused approach for low-level possession, and factors such as the amount, your history and whether there are signs of supply are relevant. A larger quantity, separated packaging, scales or cash can point to supply, which is a far more serious charge. Do not make statements without legal advice, and be aware that a conviction can affect travel and employment. A lawyer may be able to negotiate diversion or, if convicted, apply for a discharge without conviction.
