The Victims' Rights Act 2002 sets out principles and rights for victims, including being treated with courtesy and compassion, being told about the progress of the investigation and prosecution, being told about bail decisions and plea outcomes and being able to give a victim impact statement at sentencing. You can ask the police for a victim liaison contact, and the Ministry of Justice can help with a victim notification register for information about a defendant's release. The court can order reparation, which the offender can be required to pay for losses. Restorative justice can also be requested where the offender agrees, as a facilitated meeting for accountability and repair. Victim Support can provide free help and practical advice, and you can also lodge an insurance claim while the case proceeds.
