Can I dispute the agent’s commission after the sale?

The commission depends on the terms of the agency agreement. Under the Real Estate Agents Act 2008 and the Real Estate Authority's rules, an agency agreement must be in writing, must state the commission and the terms clearly, and the agent must give you certain information and explain your rights, including whether it is a sole or general agency. If the agreement is vague, ambiguity may be read against the agent, and the agent must be able to show they earned the commission, for example as the effective cause of the sale. Ask for a breakdown and a copy of the signed agreement. If you are not satisfied, complain to the agency and then to the Real Estate Authority's complaints process, and consider legal advice if a large sum is involved.
