How does the emissions trading scheme affect a small forestry owner?

A proposed quarry project near our home is being considered under the fast-track process, and residents have heard that we may not get a say. How does the fast-track consenting process work and can we still participate?
The Fast-track Approvals Act 2024 established a process for certain regionally or nationally significant projects, with decisions made by an expert panel rather than through the usual council process. Public participation is more limited than for standard notified consents, but the panel is required to invite comments from specified parties such as relevant councils, iwi authorities, owners and occupiers of adjacent land and other persons with an interest, and persons who are directly affected. You can provide written comments within the time allowed, so contact the panel secretariat to confirm your eligibility. Because the process is faster and judicial appeals are restricted, focusing on clear evidence and the conditions of consent is crucial. Consider joining forces with other residents and taking legal advice at the start.
