A doctor prescribed a medication and I had a bad reaction, can I claim?

My workplace has said that all staff in my role must be vaccinated against a particular disease or lose their jobs. I am not comfortable with this. Can an employer require this, and what are my rights?
In general, no one can be forced to receive a vaccination, as the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights and the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 protect the right to refuse medical treatment. However, an employer may be able to require vaccination for a particular role if it is reasonable, following a proper health and safety risk assessment, and after consultation with affected workers, and if the requirement is in a lawful order or properly incorporated into the employment agreement. The employer must consider alternatives, such as redeployment or other controls. A dismissal on this basis would need to be justified and follow a fair process under the Employment Relations Act 2000. Ask the employer for the risk assessment and policy, and seek advice from a lawyer or union before agreeing to anything.
