A health professional behaved inappropriately during a consultation, making comments and touching me in a way that felt wrong. I am shaking just thinking about it and I want to know how to report it safely.

You have several options, and you can choose what feels right for you. You can report it to the Health and Disability Commissioner, who can investigate complaints about breaches of the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights, including right to be free from sexual exploitation. The relevant professional regulatory authority, such as the Nursing Council or the Medical Council, can also take action under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, and serious cases may go to the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. If you believe a crime occurred, you can report it to the police, who can arrange support. The Nationwide Health and Disability Advocacy Service can provide free confidential help and a support person. Write down what you remember while it is fresh, and consider seeking support from a counsellor.

Can a medical practitioner refuse to treat me because of their beliefs?

I asked a doctor about a treatment I need and was told that they would not provide it because it is against their beliefs. They did not refer me anywhere else. Is that acceptable in New Zealand? I have never dealt with anything like this before and would like to understand my options clearly.
