My fifteen-year-old daughter went to a doctor for a health matter and I only found out afterwards. The doctor said she has confidentiality. Do parents have a right to know about their teenager’s medical treatment?

Young people have rights in health care. Under the Care of Children Act 2004, a person aged 16 or over can consent to medical treatment as if they were an adult, and children under 16 may also consent if they are considered competent, meaning that they have sufficient understanding and maturity to understand the nature and consequences of the treatment. The Health Information Privacy Code 2020 protects the confidentiality of a young person's health information, and it can generally only be disclosed to a parent with the young person's consent, or where an exception applies, such as a serious risk to the young person. Doctors normally encourage young people to involve their parents, and doing so supportively usually leads to a better outcome. Talk openly and calmly with your daughter rather than pressuring the doctor.
