Do I have to tell the insurer about renovations or a home business?
- 02.09.2026
We made a claim more than six months ago and the insurer keeps asking for more documents and telling us that it is still being assessed. We are living in temporary accommodation and paying our own costs. What can we do about the delay?
Insurers are expected to handle claims promptly and fairly. Under the Fair Insurance Code and the fair conduct obligations under the Financial Markets (Conduct of Institutions) regime, insurers should communicate clearly, keep you updated and not cause unreasonable delay. Write to the insurer to request a full timeline, an explanation of the outstanding steps and a target date for a decision. Check whether your policy covers temporary accommodation costs and ask for those to be paid while the claim is being resolved. If the delay continues, lodge a formal complaint through the insurer's internal process, and if it is not resolved within a reasonable period, refer it to the approved dispute resolution scheme, which can consider delays and their consequences. Keep a record of all communications and receipts.
