I am pregnant and am considering an abortion but I do not know how the law works or whether I need someone’s permission. I am also worried about confidentiality. What are the legal rules? I have tried asking around but nobody seems to give me a clear answer.

Abortion is regulated by the Abortion Legislation Act 2020, which decriminalised abortion and moved it into the health framework. Up to 20 weeks of pregnancy, a person can access abortion services, and a health practitioner who is qualified can provide the service after consultation. After 20 weeks, an abortion may be provided if the practitioner reasonably believes it is appropriate, having regard to the person's physical and mental health and wellbeing, and after consultation with another practitioner. You do not need permission from a partner or a parent, and your information is protected by the Health Information Privacy Code 2020. Health practitioners with a conscientious objection must tell you and give you information about how to access another provider. Contact your GP, a sexual health clinic or Family Planning for confidential support.
