Cosmetic procedures are subject to the same patient rights as other health services, including informed consent, appropriate standards of care and effective communication. The Medical Council of New Zealand has issued a statement on cosmetic procedures that says doctors must ensure patients have time to consider, must not use inducements or pressure tactics, must ensure they have a consultation with the doctor who will perform the procedure and must provide clear information about risks and costs. The Fair Trading Act 1986 also prohibits misleading advertising and pressure selling. If you feel you were pressured, do not proceed, and ask for a refund of any deposit under the clinic's terms and consumer law. You can complain to the Health and Disability Commissioner, the Medical Council or the Commerce Commission.
