I run a small building business with one employee. A client has claimed that our work caused water damage to their home, and I have public liability insurance but am unsure whether it will respond. How do these policies work?

Public liability insurance generally covers your legal liability for third-party property damage or bodily injury arising from your business activities, subject to exclusions. However, many policies exclude faulty workmanship, meaning the cost of redoing the defective work itself, while covering resulting damage such as water damage to other parts of the house. Professional indemnity or contract works insurance might be relevant for design or workmanship issues. Notify your insurer as soon as you become aware of the claim, even if you think it may be unfounded, since late notification can prejudice cover. Do not admit liability or agree to pay without the insurer's consent. Provide the policy, the contract and photographs. If the insurer declines, get advice about your rights and any other cover.

We made a claim more than six months ago and the insurer keeps asking for more documents and telling us that it is still being assessed. We are living in temporary accommodation and paying our own costs. What can we do about the delay?
