My car was written off and the insurer’s offer is much lower than expected
- 09.07.2026
After a burglary at my business, the insurer’s investigator asked me to sit for a recorded interview and provide my bank statements. I feel like I am being treated as a suspect. Is this normal and what are my obligations?
It is not unusual for insurers to investigate claims, particularly those involving theft, fire or high value, and most policies impose a duty to cooperate and provide reasonable information. That can include a statement, documents to prove ownership and value and sometimes financial information relevant to the claim. However, requests should be reasonable and relevant, and you can ask why each document is required. You are entitled to ask for a copy of the recording or transcript, to have a support person and to take advice before the interview, especially if the insurer suggests dishonesty. Answer accurately, because false statements can void your claim. If the insurer's requests seem excessive, put your concerns in writing, and you can complain through the insurer's dispute resolution scheme.
