I recently renovated my kitchen and started running a small online business from a spare room. I have not told my home insurer about either. Could that cause problems if I made a claim? I am not sure where to start or who I should be contacting about this.

It could. Your home insurance policy is based on the information you gave when it started, and you should tell the insurer about material changes, such as significant renovations, increased value, changes in use, or starting a business at home, as many policies contain conditions requiring this. Failure to disclose can allow the insurer to reduce or decline a claim if it can show that the change was material and affected its risk assessment. A home business can also affect contents and liability cover, since business stock and equipment are often excluded from home policies. Contact the insurer now, tell them about both changes and ask for the policy to be updated in writing. You might need a separate business policy.

My insurer declined my home claim as wear and tear, is that fair?

Water damage appeared in my ceiling and the insurer sent an assessor who said the leak came from a worn pipe fitting, so the claim was declined under a wear and tear exclusion. I have paid premiums for years without a claim. Can they really refuse?

Our home was badly damaged by fire and the insurer says the cost to rebuild is higher than my sum insured, and that they will only pay up to that amount or reduce the claim proportionally. Was I supposed to have been told about this, and what are my rights?
