After a collision that I think was partly the other driver’s fault, their insurer has called me asking for a statement and suggesting I sign a form. I have not spoken to my own insurer yet. What should I do?

It is usually wise to speak to your own insurer first, since your policy is likely to require prompt notification of any accident, and your insurer can advise you on what to say and manage the claim. You are not obliged to provide a statement to the other driver's insurer, and anything you say or sign could affect responsibility for the accident. Be polite, ask for the request in writing and say you will respond after taking advice. Do not sign a release or admit fault. Provide your own insurer with the police report number, photos, witness details and dashcam footage. Your insurer will generally handle contact with the other side and may pursue recovery of the costs against the other driver's insurer.

My car was damaged while parked on the street, and the other driver drove off. My insurer is asking for an excess before it will repair the car. Since it was not my fault, why should I pay anything? I have never dealt with anything like this before and would like to understand my options clearly.

Do I have to tell the insurer about renovations or a home business?

I recently renovated my kitchen and started running a small online business from a spare room. I have not told my home insurer about either. Could that cause problems if I made a claim? I am not sure where to start or who I should be contacting about this.
