A salesperson knocked on our door and spent over an hour explaining a solar panel package. We signed a form on their tablet because he was persuasive and we felt awkward saying no. Since then we have read about the costs and want out. Do we have any right to cancel?

Probably yes. The Fair Trading Act 1986 regulates unsolicited direct sales, which includes door-to-door sales where you did not invite the salesperson for that purpose. In those cases you can cancel within five working days after you receive the required written agreement and cancellation information. If the salesperson did not give you a compliant written agreement, the cancellation right may not have started running, and the contract may be unenforceable against you. Send a written cancellation notice now, by email and post, and keep proof of sending. If the company pushes back or has already started work, get advice quickly. If you signed a finance agreement with a separate lender, also notify the lender and check your rights under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003.

I bought a second-hand car from a yard and the automatic gearbox started slipping about three weeks later. The dealer says used cars are sold as seen and that I accepted the risk when I signed. Is that true, or do I have rights because it came from a dealer?

I was given a spa voucher as a present and put it in a drawer. When I finally tried to book, the business said it had expired the month before and refused to honour it. There was no expiry date printed on the voucher itself, only on their website. Can they do that?
