What are my rights if an airline cancels or significantly delays my flight?

I booked a delivery for some goods with a well-known freight company, and at the last minute they cancelled, saying only that the goods did not meet their carriage requirements, without further explanation. Can they simply refuse to carry goods like this?
A transport company generally has the freedom to decide what it will and will not carry, subject to its own published terms and conditions, and many carriers reserve the right to refuse goods that are dangerous, prohibited, inadequately packaged or otherwise outside their carriage requirements, such as certain hazardous materials regulated under the Land Transport Rule: Dangerous Goods. However, if the company had already accepted your booking and confirmed the terms, a late cancellation without adequate explanation may amount to a breach of contract if it causes you loss, and you may be entitled to compensation for reasonably foreseeable losses, subject to any limitation clauses in their terms. The Fair Trading Act 1986 also requires that the company not mislead you about what it would carry when you made the booking. Ask for a clear written explanation of which requirement was not met, review the booking terms, and if the refusal appears unreasonable or contradicts what you were told, raise a formal complaint and consider your contractual remedies.
