I paid a repairer a hefty amount to fix my dishwasher. It broke down again within days, and the repairer said the new fault was unrelated and wanted another call-out fee. I feel the job was done poorly. Do I have any rights when the goods are not the problem but the service is?

Yes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 applies to services as well as goods. A service provider must carry out the service with reasonable care and skill, must complete it within a reasonable time if no time was agreed, and must charge a reasonable price if none was fixed in advance. If the same fault reappears shortly after the repair, that suggests the work may not have met the standard, but the repairer might show the new problem is genuinely different. Ask for the job sheet and get a second opinion from another repairer in writing. If the work was substandard, you can require the repairer to remedy it at no extra charge, or claim the reasonable cost of having it fixed elsewhere. The Disputes Tribunal is the usual forum if agreement cannot be reached.

I took out a personal loan and the lender approved it after a five-minute online application without asking much about my expenses. Within months I was struggling with the repayments and my other debts. Shouldn't a lender have checked that I could afford it, and do I have any recourse?

A parcel arrived with a set of kitchen knives I never ordered. A week later I received an invoice and then a threatening reminder about debt collection. I had not even opened the package. Am I obliged to pay, or to send the goods back at my own cost?

I paid by card for a jacket from an overseas online shop that looked professional and even quoted prices in New Zealand dollars. Weeks have passed with no delivery and the seller has stopped answering emails. Do New Zealand consumer laws help me at all, or am I just out of pocket?

I was given a spa voucher as a present and put it in a drawer. When I finally tried to book, the business said it had expired the month before and refused to honour it. There was no expiry date printed on the voucher itself, only on their website. Can they do that?

I bought a coat online, tried it on and simply decided I did not like it. The shop refuses any refund, saying they do not do refunds for change of mind. The coat has not been worn and still has tags. Are they legally allowed to say no?
